Growing up in nature

“我是东北辽宁人。我家的位置比较特别,它是一个非常小的城镇,往外开10分钟就是农村,有山有水。往城里再开一点就到城里。它结合了自然环境与城市生活,不完全是乡镇或农村,也不完全是城市。在我成长过程中,比如说上小学的时候,我下课之后就跑到河边抓鱼去了,也经常每个周末去城里转转。”

“I was born in a small town in Liaoning province. And that is a very special place, from where takes only 10 mins to get to the beautiful rural scenery. The other direction will lead to the center of downtown. It combines the natural environment and urban life, not exactly a countryside nor city center.  When I was in primary school, I usually went to riverbank catching fishes after class. Also, I would spend a weekend wandering in the city.”

渴望好设计
Be eager for good design

“我从小对设计都有一种渴求的心态。当我看到一些好的设计会非常得爱惜,因为我们那看到一些好的东西其实不是太容易的,我的亲戚从台湾回来会带一些东西,这些东西对我来讲都是珍宝。所以也正是因为看到这些东西不那么容易,才会看得特别重要。”

“My pursuit for design showed up when I was a kid. I would cherish all the well-designed things because back to the time we grew up, good designs are not easy to access. Baubles brought by my relatives from Taiwan are all treasures to me. The rarity makes them even valued.”

做自己
Be myself

“对于我来讲,我觉得最重要的就是做自己,就是做我想做的东西,包括到任何一个环节,比如说从设计上,比如说从店铺的体验上,比如说从对客户的服务,这些方面我们都特别在意,就是我做的是一个整体的系统,不完全是抽离地看的,这个线条怎么样,这个木头怎么样,并不是这样的,而是一个完整的系统,一个体验的系统,一个生活方式的系统,包括我们的自媒体,他们在做上门的比如说梵几在家这样的采访,这个都是梵几,这个系统比较特别的地方。”

“For me, the most important thing is to be myself, which means to do the things I want, including all aspects from design, shopping experience to customer service. We take them seriously and take the work as a holistic system instead of separated elements like figure or wood. Things don’t work in that way. It is an integrated system, a system of experience that would effect our lifestyle.”

关注大自然
Care about the nature

“我觉得最重要的一点,是关于对自然的关注,从梵几这个名字来讲,它就是带有一定的禅意,我们会关注于如何自然地生活,如何跟大自然和谐的这种理念,这个是我们一贯以来的很重要的点。”

“As far as I am concerned, the most important point is paying attention to nature. Taking the name of Fnji as an example, it contains something about Zen. We will focus on how to live naturally, and the concept of increasing harmony between nature and human beings.”

家具的始与终
The process of making a piece of furniture
“每一个家具都不一样,它有很多种方式。有一些是根据需求来的,比如说因为我们缺一些东西。缺一个什么样的书架或者是什么样的柜子。还有的东西是积累的,比如说通过日常生活,通过旅游观察到自然以及生活各个方面逐步地积累而成。当我们要出新品的时候,就开始从其中提取一些灵感。
我们没有市场调研这个过程,对我们来讲市场调研实际上就是个人感受的过程,销售反馈客户特别需要什么,或者是我个人生活特别需要什么。梵几发布家具的时间并不是特别规律,我们一般会定制,我个人积累了一些设计需求,然后我们会把它整理出来之后开始设计。我下边的设计师团队,他们也开始去认领一些设计,分发下去之后汇集草图,然后开始逐步地去做研发。”
“Each piece of furniture was born with uniqueness. Some were designed according to the needs of customers, something of a rigid demand, such as a particular bookshelf or wardrobe. While others were based on the accumulation of daily experience through observing all the aspects of nature and everyday life. The time that Fnji releases our design is not rigid. We usually make exclusive products, when I personally have some requirements of furnish design, then the process will begin after we sort those ideas out. “

“研发的过程要跑很多个厂家。有一些部分涉及到材质,有一些部门涉及到一些特殊的五金件,这些开发都是逐步进行的。沙发做出来要再做另外一个桌子,是完全不同的厂家。去厂里看过程多数都是由我带着助理去的,因为我要关注每一个细节的进展。当一个家具通过二次三次四次,甚至是六到八次的打样之后,我们决定可以封样。去厂里一开门看到实物那一瞬间是最兴奋的。当你在图纸上或者用3D的效果渲染出来的时候,都没有看到实体的这种感觉。大多数是惊喜。是这样!对了,这个跟我想的一样!比我想的好一些!”
“R & D process requires the designer to visit a lot of manufacturers. Some are related to the material, and the others are involved in specialized hardware, these developments are gradually carried out. A table will come after the finished sofa, and they are from completely different manufacturers. I always went to the factories with my assistant, because every detail of the making progress deserves close attention. When a piece of furniture has been done proofing three or four times, even more than eight times, we will make the final decision. And the most exciting moment is when opening the door and seeing the actual object in the factory for the first time.”

Explore the innovation of the furniture
“我们只是在节点连接结构截取了中国传统结构当中的榫卯结构,梵几整体结构还是基于北欧家具延伸,结构多是整面的实木。所以,梵几并不是完全的西方,也不是完全的中国。布料跟金属是我们现在在研发的课题。
首先,从软包来讲,国际上的一些品牌,比如说欧洲的品牌,意大利的品牌,软包是他们最重要的组成部分,而日本家具实木是最重要的组成部分,但实际上欧洲的家具舒适性更强,我会在一些跟人接触更多的家具上选择用软包的方式。所以这一块的研发是我们现在比较重要的一点。
金属不一定要用那么粗就可能完成一个结构。一个桌子要用实木去做最起码要用到4×4或者是更粗的一个结构做,它带来的限制比较大。我们经常会看到一些设计,它的线条特别细,用的是实木,但是实际上那些只是作秀用的,真正在生活中真有这样的东西极少,它很难走入家庭。
2017年新的系列就要发布了,有几把椅子是有软包的,从价格来讲是比以前更低,更容易接受的。以前梵几的圈椅需要3000块钱人民币,但是现在通过我改良结构之后,只需要2000左右。去年花了特别多精力去做这件事,这些椅子也是可以量产的。”
“We just extract the Chinese traditional Tenon structure and apply it to node connection part, while the whole design is still based on the extension of the Nordic style of integral solid wood. Therefore fnji is not entirely Western nor Chinese. Fabrics and metals are what we are now focusing on.
Upholstery is the key element for European brands, as for Japanese ones, wood is. But speaking of comfort, European furniture is more user-friendly, so I will assure the frequently-used furniture is upholstered. The metal is more flexible than solid wood when requiring the same rigidity. For example, it may take at least a 40mm-thick wood to achieve the same rigidness which brings greater restrictions.
The new series of 2017 will be unveiled, regarding of the price, soft-packaged chairs make it more affordable than usual. Before the structural amelioration, a round-backed armchair of Fnji takes about 3000 RMB, yet now takes only two third of it.”

时代的机遇与世界范围的挑战
Opportunities & Challenges
“家具设计这个概念是从西方来的,我们接触它的时间特别短,国人对于家具设计的关注也是这几年才开始。需求很大,刚刚才开始开这个口,我们也刚刚开始关注外边的这些东西。一个真正好的设计大概是多少钱,这个连中国现在,包括设计师都不知道,很多人也不知道,我也是去国外看了很多家店之后才知道,那图上的那把椅子,原来要30万,这是完全没想到的,最初觉得最多五万块钱。
我们对家具设计的认知才刚刚形成,这整个是一个很初期的阶段。工业设计我先不谈,整个中国家具设计,是一个非常初期的阶段。但是我们要关注的并不是我们比他们差多少,而是我们会做成什么样,我相信有一点就是,未来中国人喜欢的家具是中国人做出来的。这一点是毋庸置疑的,因为我们更了解我们自己的东西。所以,我们去赶上这个时间和跟他们有同样的语言,但是设计出不同风格的这个可能性的话,我觉得时间不会特别长,但是我们确实是在初期阶段。
我觉得我们做的一些东西,现在拿出来之后,大家第一反应,就是日本的,就是这个是最大的挑战,我们从日本或者是从北欧学了很多东西,这个是他启发我们去传承这条线往下做的一件事。但是,最重要的是有一天当你设计出来之后,别人第一反应是中国的,这个是很重要的。
现在还是有很多人说梵几很日本。我们其实也没法去解释,我们跟日本到底有多大的不同。但是日本设计师看到梵几的时候觉得会很中国,就是日本人不会这么做,这个问题我问过日本的设计师黑川雅之,我见过他一面,我问他你怎么看待我设计的东西?他说你的东西肯定不是日本的,因为日本人不会这么做。所以,像这些方面会逐步地形成,我的挑战也是。我希望能做得更加得中国,更加中国当代设计。未来几十年,拿出来之后,所有的都是一个中国设计。”
“The concept of furniture design comes from western countries. Our understanding of furniture design has just been formed and still remained in an initial stage. However, what we have to focus on is not the gap between us, but the things that we can do. I believe that in the future, popular furniture in China will be designed by Chinese people. And this is beyond doubt because we know about our own things better.
People now still recognize our design as a style of Japanese, I think this misunderstanding is the greatest challenge we are facing with. After we had studied from Japan and nordic, they inspired us to carry on exploring the particular line. The most vital task is giving others a spontaneously think, this is from China, and that is important.”
